Hygge self care routine ideas

Whichever season it is that you’re arriving on this post, there is always room to embrace the concept of hygge and install it in everyday life, a gentle, cosy lit space of home, warmth, honey and spices, community and coziness, touching on Mori girl style. Here are some girly ways to embrace it, a dreamy and girly take on hygge… get snuggled up and stuck in!

Secret trick! Pop these gorgeous, yet affordable wax melts in your drawers to scent everything inside them! They are absolutely divine and the best thing I’ve ever purchased. You can get Lush’s The Comforter scented ones and their coveted Snow Fairy wax melts!

1. Go on a sensory trip! It’s about treating and delighting every one of your senses, delighting a symphony of senses, with delicious feeling fabrics, textures, scents. We always go about seeing and thinking without using much of our other senses. Treat yourself to some scented pens!

2. Minimal but intentional – making sure the things you own have a purpose and/or bring you joy can bring incredible satisfaction. Using Marie Kondo’s method, we can thank each thing we have used but have no use for anymore, thank it for the joy it brought to our lives and pass it on in the kindest way, whether that’s a charity shop or store or special recycling bin in your neighbourhood. Dispose of it in a kind way to thank it for its service and avoid leaving waste behind.

3. Don’t feel guilty about indulging – craft a deluxe tray of cinnamon buns and absolutely slather them in incredible icing, for the sheer reason of always wanting to do it.

4. The Sunday morning girl – channel a little bit of her in every day, wake up with your loved ones, eat a honey pancake breakfast with them, walk with them to work, pop a piece of fruit in their lunchbox or treat them to a lovely cake or gingerbread with some small change.

5. Slow rhythm rituals – how funny we have forgotten how to indulge in our old time and peaceful hobbies, we are made so so much better by them, but we almost fear them! They are powerful, they colour whole hours and days, they are part of life’s rich patchwork. Kick back and immerse yourself in an afternoon of scrabble by the hot stove, pop a fluffy rug down and some cushions to sit on and spend the afternoon deep in laughter with your loved ones.

6. The perfect blissful movie night – make it like a party occasion with pink popcorn and edible glitter and give it that vintage drive though feel with glow sticks, pick n mix and stripy straws, maybe even a vintage film on too!

7. So much fun with small change – save up all your pennies in a pretty ‘hygge’ pot you can decorate yourself. It can have sooo much potential, even if that is to buy some tasty apples from the market and supplies to make an apple pie, or some pretty ribbon to decorate a gift.

8. Wear an incredibly fluffy hat and gloves – the fluffier the better, really enjoy and savour bundling yourself up in ivory knit, peter pan collars and fancy buttoned coats. Even better if you can thrift them or find them on ebay, find them soooo much cheaper (Ted Baker garments, I’m thinking of you!) or even pop them on your knee and use your good/imaginary sewing skills (delete as required) to bring them back to life and not to sew it to your own skirt (bad Liz, bad)

9. Purchase some recyclable hangers – to give some recycled ocean plastic a new life and purpose and give you more freedom to hang all the lovely cosy clothes you managed to find or make, it gives you more freedom to go shopping for the clothes you love, sustainably of course!

10. Treat your pets and get them ready for winter – with a lovely winter pet jumper or coat, a microwavable heat up pack or snuggly bed or lots of lovely tissues they can shred up to make a cosy nest. Have fun just watching them a while enjoying their new present.

11. Create angel inspired artwork for your walls – even if you live in a rented property, you have full control on what you can pin up on the walls or frame the walls with. Emblems such as angels are perfect to adorn your walls with as they represent kindess, a childlike innocence and way of viewing the world, promote feelings of protection and safety and feeling cosy and looked after.

12. Hot baths and fairy stories – appeal to your inner child and make them over the moon happy with a lovely little ritual of a hot bath, guilty pleasure read and favourite dessert of all time. Think back to your childhood or any time in the past and any little moments you loved and recreate them, to create a little space of refuge, a sanctuary. Think feeling soothed, warm and safe.

13. Read some Tennyson and underline your favourite lines – poetry is pure art and can make you feel amazing things. It can be exquisitely beautiful, I love a bit of Tennyson and romantic poetry and Helen Dunmore too, you can almost taste her writing. Write down your favourite lines on scraps of paper fold them up and use them as bookmarks, tuck them inside your books, attach them as little gift labels, make iphone wallpapers from them.

14. Collect movie tickets and make a little collage board you can frame – pin to it snaps of concerts or at movies, or even little perfume sample cards, postcards, pretty paint colours or anything that gives you lots of lovely and girly inspiration.

15. Buy fashion magazines for the pictures and perfume samples – a lovely, seriously fun, guilty pleasure activity for winter, get circling any products you love for Christmas ideas or gift ideas – just like when you were a child poring over the Argos catalogue!

16. Wear some extremely fluffy soft socks – form a fluffy sock collection of dreams.

17. Eat desserts warm with an accompaniment – like hot toffee sauce, whipped cream, custard etc. These days we never seem to have time to go extra with our desserts. Eating them warm from the oven is pure perfection on a cold evening, plus it helps to warm you up!

18. Marvelling in architecture and paintings – is lovely in the colder months when the opulence of a gallery or grand museum offers shelter and warmth from the cold and somewhere lovely to go too, it becomes extra special in winter time, like a little refuge. Churches are beautiful places to visit as well, no matter if you are religious or not. It can be a religious experience or one of warmth, cosiness and feeling welcome somewhere. A home away from home.

19. Growing long hair you can wear as a scarf – for extra cosiness.

20. Read Wuthering Heights to family and friends – reading can be a solitary affair, so invite your loved ones to join you! Create a gorgeous atmosphere with the sounds of a crackling fire, channel Little Women and get different people to do different voices and put on a play, it will bring it to life at best and at worst, end up absolute hilarious!

21. Collect and try out all the different teas you can – a fun way to help you warm up and find new favourites.

22. Start collecting pretty bits and pieces to wrap your winter gifts – create a gift wrapping kit that you can add to at all times of year! You can add lovely stickers, pretty ribbon and pretty papers and form a lovely collection, maybe some stamps or scissors that make a scallop pattern for pretty pink labels. Having a pile of gorgeous gift supplies makes me feel so cosy yet put together, it will be such a lovely ritual to get it out come a time you want to wrap gifts for friends and they will be sure to steal the show at every gathering!

23. Make some maple fudge, pop it in some little boxes and tie with a pretty ribbon – and share the prettiness with family, friends and neighbours. PS this will make the perfect Christmas present, it’s so thoughtful and easy to do!

24. Hang windchimes with little reindeer bells – to remind you of winter.

25. Make jam tarts with your friends or loved ones on an afternoon – this is such a perfect make and there is a whole experience involved, from rolling the pastry, to laying on the jam to smelling them baking. Gingerbread men is also a perfect make!

26. Add drops of pine and spiced essential oils to your cleaning – to make your house smell like spices and be shiny clean at the same time.

27. Make a beautiful and wholesome little meal for your family – lay it out beautifully on a little plate and go the extra mile, prepare it like in a fancy restaurant.

28. Make a little wish jar circa 2011 – get out the glitter and sequins!
