A fairytale esque dorm room on a budget, DIY tricks

The bedroom is an important space, somewhere to relax, to dream, to hide away from the world after a difficult day. It’s fun and can be therapeutic spending some time and effort to making it look nice, making it somewhere that you genuinely enjoy spending time. Even with a small budget you can switch things up, make it unique to you and give your bedroom a new lease of life! Here are some DIY tricks to give your room that ethereal, princess castle style look, instant Cinderella vibes.

Secret trick! Pop these gorgeous, yet affordable wax melts in your drawers to scent everything inside them! They are absolutely divine and the best thing I’ve ever purchased. You can get Lush’s The Comforter scented ones and their coveted Snow Fairy wax melts!

Upcycle old furniture – Upcycled furniture is an amazing way to breathe new life into an old fashioned and neglected piece. You can transform an older piece in to your dream piece of furniture, with maybe some colour and different upholstry, you have full reign on giving it flair!

Look for wooden items at junk shops and on Facebook marketplace, they’re usually cheap or given away for free. With some sanding, chalk paint, new handles and a bit of love and care you can transform an old piece of furniture into something you adore. Have a look on Pinterest for creative ideas and before and afters to give you inspiration. You could turn an old set of draws into a dressing table by finding a mirror and painting them in the same paint for a seamless look. You could upcycle some really pretty old chests or add metallic handles for a dreamy, modern look.

DIY some decor – Have you ever tried making your own decor? Not only is it fun but you can make one-off pieces and everything will be cheaper than you’d find in a shop. From sewing your own curtains or cushion covers with a sewing machine, to using battery powered glue guns to add decorative touches to old plant pots, frames or mirrors there’s tons of things you could do. My favourite part is that you have free reign to create whatever you want, your curtains or quilt of dreams. Try making a patchwork quilt this autumn for your bed to give it that real fairytale feel.

Switch up the drawer knobs – a really cheap and easy way to really change the look and feel of your space, change the drawer or even door knobs in your room. It’s the perfect way to revamp your room and costs so little time and energy.

Go big or go home – instead of smaller works of art on your walls, choose one big dominant piece to create the illusion of grandeur. Go all out with the frame, or fashion your own! If your room is big enough try installing the focal piece of a faux fireplace for extra princessy vibes, with a mantlepiece to keep sorts of trinkets on. You could DIY this or upcycle an older mantlepiece frame, add some panelling detail and pop brick like wallpaper inside to emulate the look of a chimney.

A little symmetry – introducing a little symmetry, like lamps either side of your bed, can introduce a feeling of grandeur and make your room feel more palace like. Other little symmetrical features could be mirrors, or even wall decals or old fashioned esque candle holders.

Bring colour up on the ceiling – this can be a little daunting with darker or brighter colours, but if you have your walls a delicate pink or more muted hue, try bringing it up on to the ceiling, to make the walls look taller and envelope the room in their colour. Since there is no break between the walls and the ceiling, it optically extends the wall, creating the feeling of grandeur. For extra points, see if you can make the doors and radiators the same colour too!

<3

A little window seat – no matter how little your window, try adding a cushion or two to sit on the window sill, or move a trunk to sit just below the window. The perfect place to read! I also made a little cosy reading nook here by pushing my bed to the window.

Scour charity shops – Charity shops can be home to some real hidden gems. Scouring through shelves and racks of dusty old items, you might find the perfect item or something absolutely gorgeous you can work with and transform. You can make a whole day of it, it’s so much fun.

It could be anything from a beautiful vintage lamp base that you could update with a new shade. It could be a pretty jewellery box, or even a nearly new item which someone has hardly used before giving to charity. You might not find your perfect item right away, but make a habit of paying your local charity shops a visit and have a look around. If you remain patient and open minded you could get the perfect piece with a bit of history to it as well.

What touches have you added to your own room which look great but didn’t cost the earth? ♡

These tips are so fabulous! I totally agree on the drawer knobs. I found a set for really cheap at a discount home store and it totally changed up the look of my old dresser.

I love decoration and DIY, especially during the autumn/winter as I love to make everything cosy and Christmassy! My favourite thing is fairy lights and pretty wall displays with photos and quotes 😀
