I wanted to make a little ‘swanstagram’ swan appreciation post… then decided to add in a few snaps I took around town on the same day. I am the nosiest person when it comes to seeing where people live haha, I am
always curious to see what it’s like there and love visiting, living vicariously, through someone else’s lens.
My town is Kendal, a market town based about 8 miles from Windermere and I live a little further out, on the outskirts, surrounded by fields and sheep. Here are my favourite little corners of this place I call home…
We have so many becks and streams all running down to meet the river running through our town and one bubbling by behind the fence at the foot of our garden. I’ve been incredibly excited to see swans up and down the river, I’m keeping my eye out for cygnets as we often see them every year! Spring is my favourite time of year, it means blossoms all along the river, baby swans and ducklings and sunshine making the water sparkle.
Old stone bridges like these carry the traffic over and it weaves in and out through the one way system; the bridges are quite narrow! We easily get flooded, the water comes down from the hills when it rains and the river rises quickly. A few years back the water on the roads rose so deep it ravaged the houses, it destroyed so many people’s homes and affected even more. I love how everyone came together to offer aid and lodging.
Walking up the cobbled streets, there are so many beautiful old houses in town that haven’t changed much from over a hundred years ago. Sometimes, when a shop is changing its front decor you can see the old, archaic painted sign underneath. Little plaques are dotted everywhere, telling you the history of each of the buildings.
The shapes of the rooftops, some falling inwards, the chimneys are still the same and I love that, it’s almost like going back in time. Church bells, that age old harmony, are always sounding in the distance.
I think the swans are pretty friendly here, they definitely associate people with food! They like to haunt us, drifting up and down the river by the art gallery and play park and we stroll along eating fish and chips or nutella sandwiches from home. We like to stand on the footbridge and watch them pass under us, a glimmer of silk white in the sun and the water, weaving in and out of blotches of shade, and then they are gone.
The earliest blossoms outside the regency style houses. My town has a very small museum and an art gallery, The Abbott Hall. Shops… we have a multitude of charity shops and tea rooms haha! It’s very possible to while away hours searching for treasures and eating endless sandwiches and scones, take it from me guilty
Hello chocolate shop! This is one of the quaintest places in my town, even though it is definitely cheaper to get your kendal mint cake at the newsagents haha. It’s an old little house with a very, very low ceiling, stepping inside feels like entering a cave. There are many alleyways and archways from another time, the stonework still remains from where the blood used to run down and away through the streets from the butchers.
We have many elderly residents living here, especially around the town centre and it is almost possible to live through a different era in that respect; when I am in town you will almost always find me sitting at the bus stop for what feels like forever learning all the funny old things from years ago, where the old schools used to be and how people grew up. I kind of feel like a stowaway here most of the time. My town brings me a lot of inspiration for my blog. I wanted to set up a place to talk about the feelings I got from the places around me.
Let’s meet for lunch and eat endless scones and watch ducks and swans! Have you been here before? ♡
It looks gorgeous! So very much like spring. Your photography is excellent π
