How to build an 'aesthetical' blog

Here is how to build a blog with a certain aesthetic, in terms of how the word is used on instagram, or in other words a distinct and beautiful theme. This is kind of an ultimate assemblage of everything I use
and recommend to create a blog or online space with a specific look or theme that exudes your personality and is unmistakably yours. Here I will share my favourite tips and behind the scenes advice and savings too for making and customising your magical space on the web until it's cute as fudge. I hope you're gonna love it!

1. First I chose a name for my blog. I found it really fun to compose a little mood board and think about the overall look of my blog when choosing a name. It could be something very important to you, a line from a book or poem you find beautiful. Consider the colours you might normally head for. What are you drawn to? What gets you feeling excited? Maybe shabby chic bunting, something funky and bohemian, some little autumnal elements? It took me some time and posts before I finally knew what I wanted my blog to be, but looking at other blogs and crafting mood boards are great ways to discover what you want yours to be like, which colour schemes have you oooh-ing and ahhh-ing.

2. Pick a dreamy piece of header art - browsing and picking a header can also make you realise what colours you love and it's lots of fun. I picked out these headers because they are so beautiful with their watercolour elements, I fell for them hard. I managed to do a bit of negotiating and got a rare £4 off code for you, you can use the code icecream10 for all of these and save money on your header. The headers you find here are fully customisable, you can change the writing to whatever you want. Every purchase feeds a small business too!

Modern Marie Antoinette style...

Having a header that you are so excited about was far worth the investment for me and I will always advocate grabbing a saving here and there when it comes to putting your blog together as it goes a long way. The header is my favourite part of the blog to customise as it immediately grabs attention, and forms a fundamental part of your blog's image in your readers' mind. You can also potentially use it to furnish any business cards.

2. Create the little magical space of your own! Bluehost here is probably the most popular option to use, it's the most affordable at the moment and definitely worthwhile as you can launch your website with one click, plus they have really lovely customer service. You will receive hosting (that's your very own website) plus a free domain (your blog address, for example, yourblogname.com) to make it nice and professional.

This was the most important step for me when setting up my blog as most often than not the companies approaching you for sponsored posts will require you to have your own domain. If you want to experiment a little first and skip this step that's totally fine! Wordpress is the best place to set up the beginnings of your internet realm as it means you can get furnishing your little home and then make it your own website with pretty much one click, instead of messing with the code and IP addresses that I had to do first time around.

Choose your package - Once you've clicked 'Get Started' you will be greeted by this lovely screen here. I recommend the basic plan as you receive lots of nice things and you can always upgrade later down the road.

Craft your own domain! Once you have your blog name and see that it's available, go and grab that domain name. If you're still umming and ahhing, that's okay too. A little window should pop up after a while letting you skip this step and you can even decide on a final domain name later after you already have your website.

Pop in your details to create your account, or click the 'sign in with Google' button above to make things faster. In terms of packages, choosing a 36 month or 60 month deal will save you more but the shorter deals are cheaper upfront. All are fine to choose! I would click the 'Domain Privacy Protection' box but leave the others unchecked.

Once you place your order you will be asked to set up your password and then you're in! Just follow the steps they show you to connect your account to Wordpress. If you already have a blog made on Wordpress you can choose it here. Don't worry too much about the choices you make here, nothing has to be permanent.

Your site is now ready! To visit it, go to http://www.yourdomainname.com/wp-admin and sign in with your username and password. This is so exciting as now you can get customising!

3. Now let's set up the theme of your blog, the basic beautiful framework - Referring to your mood boards, or even boards that others have made on Pinterest or Twitter, have a scroll through some Wordpress themes to see what takes your fancy. For me, I love beautiful, classical designs like this one, this slightly pricier monochrome beauty or this gorgeous sleek lilac number. I also found these on Etsy that are much cheaper and are gorgeous. It's great that they come with already made social media icons and sharing buttons.

4. Create some content, the 'jam' or filling in your blog - The really fun thing about creating an aesthetical blog or content with a distinct theme is that it doesn't matter what camera you use, just the colours and feel that you create with the tools that you have. Your blog toolkit could simply consist of your iphone, the things in your home and the things around you that make you happy. You could use the flash in a dark room or try out different filters on your phone or presets online. Here are some of my favourite photo ideas you can use...

. A snap of a pretty wall or door - these can crop up anywhere

. A look in shop windows - just make sure you have the permission of the shop owner first! There are so many pretty displays to take pictures of and the light reflecting on the glass can look all ethereal and throw out all different dreamy spectrums of colour.

. Grey walls, grey street cobbles, grey roads - grey is no longer boring! Grey is gentle and delicate and beautiful. If you look at my feed above, immediately you can see the pinks but it is in fact the greys that hold it together.

. Outfit details - I love to use a close up of my earring, hair accessory, the pretty hem or detail on a top, cute buttons, jewellery, a snap of a hairstyle that went well haha! I love photos that 'catch me in the act', capture the act of stirring a teaspoon, pulling socks on, tying a shoe lace of pretty boots I bought, kicking through the leaves, there are unlimited ideas!

. Different colour, textured and patterned clothes or furnishings arranged together

. Bits and bobs for props - I made a little shabby chic photo prop guide here but I also love to use seasonal elements like flowers and blossoms in spring, samples of lace, fabric and wallpaper. I love to use the things around me, lip balm with pretty packaging, cute mugs, crystals, jewellery, cute stationery, even pretty foods.

. Shadows and different light effects - @avenuedesreveries feed on instagram is so ethereal and beautiful and offers so much inspiration colour wise, I love her play on light and shadows

. Pretty book covers - I love to browse my local library and borrow books with pretty covers and illustrations

. Pretty product packaging - monochrome packaging works really well as it's so sleek and simple, it creates an air of sophistication. Think Lush packaging, Jo Malone, even those dreamy looking Aldi dupes

. The sky at different times of day - @camilletalks feed on instagram is enthralling, I love how she photographs the sky and weaves it in to her photo feed, the rich purples are mesmerising. Sunsets and silhouettes make really beautiful photos and produce jewel like colours, there is so much vibrancy to be found in nature.

Experiment a lot to find out what photos you like to take. Look at your moodboards, notice the 'hidden' colours, the 'in between' colours like grey, taupe, lilac. Instead of trying to 'cut out' colours that don't go, explore and get to know the spectrum you are working with. You end up seeing beautiful colours and hues everywhere. There are so many colours to choose and more freedom than you realise.

Also! Don't be afraid to pop in a picture that doesn't accord, it will work favourably and stand out against the rest of your theme, making the rest really mesh. Don't be afraid to embark on a journey with your aesthetic and refine it, it's natural to change over time. Looking at your favourite accounts can offer you endless inspiration for your own blog photos, just be careful not to copy what others are doing. Maybe use the concept and brainstorm a few ideas off it, make it your own and credit whoever you are inspired by!

5. Choose a few social media platforms that you love and set up home there, furnish them with some pretty photos or sayings. I made a board of hundreds of my favourite quotes/pieces here. It's great to make an account on every platform, so it is there if you ever choose to use it, but you don't have to use them at all. Maybe choose the platforms that are the most fun to you, those that give you the most freedom to express yourself.

I really hope you found these useful, for me putting together a blog is like stitching a lot of parts together like patchwork, using a moodboard or three as a guide haha! I hope I found some great parts here for you to enjoy and work in to your own gorgeous space. Send me the links to your blogs/social media/beautiful spaces!
