Preschool ideas for little ones

Oscar is due to start nursery school come September 2018 and we don't feel ready at all! Oscar is still very shy with other children and adults alike and unused to group sessions in a learning environment. I'm looking to
get involved with playgroup sessions and parent and baby events to prepare us for next year. Here are some favourites from across the web, I'm hoping this might help some fellow mums in a similar position!

Playgroup or preschool? - There is both a preschool and playgroup in our area and for a while I had been debating between the two. Preschool sessions often last longer, around three hours, and it is common for parents to leave their child there for short periods of time, to help them to adjust to a nursery setting (though are welcome to stay if wished!). For these reasons our preschool sessions are more costly but are nice and nearby and it's really exciting that Oscar may make friends who he could potentially move up the school with!

If this seems like too big a step (like us!) check your area for playgroup sessions. Ours cost £1.50 for an hour and half session and run twice a week, attended by a lovely little close knit community and set in a children's area in a nearby church. They have really lovely toys and facilities and even include a drink and biscuit! They require a parent or caregiver to attend with the child, so might not be as easily accessible for working parents.

There are little cooking clubs like Kiddy Cook and Cookie Tots that sound so cute, for 2-4 year olds and 4-11 year olds, taking place in locations all over the UK. Alternatively, check your local swimming pool or leisure centre for toddler and children clubs and many do some lovely prenatal classes for mums to be! This will definitely be an exciting option to explore for us as Oscar has loved his swimming trips so far. For yoga mums and babies these double Yoga classes sound adorable, suitable for every age or stage of pregnancy. To help teach poise and spatial awareness while having lots of fun there are even Ballet baby sessions out there!

The Little House of Science classes also sound so good! These are some really cute science classes for kids in the London area, for all ages. I thought I'd put it out there for those lucky souls in the London area or nearby! They do Little Discovery sessions for 6-12 months and 12-24 months, Little Maths, Rhythm and Shapes for 2-3 and 3-4 years, Little Science sessions for 3-4, 4-7 and 5-8 years and Big Science Academy for older ones of 8-11 year olds. We are heading down south soon to stay with family and hoping to try out one of their special Holiday Workshops for three days as they are meant to be such delightful, sensory experiences.

It will involve a little commuting still but Oscar is so used to travelling down to the West Mids with us, to see grandparents. The workshop is meant to be Spooky Science themed and I think I am a bit too excited! Their website is especially cute too and it is easy to check out upcoming classes and book in for them. Older kids can enrol for tailor made tutoring, covering Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Maths and all stages. The sessions and classes are perfectly designed to give young children a boost of encouragement and confidence to excel in their new class, whatever stage they are at. They seem particularly good at piquing children's curiosity and making the sessions fun, teaching early science and maths as thrilling subjects through sensory play.

Oscar is very in to Dinosaurs and Transportation aka dinosaur books, motorbikes and cars, so he would love the Maths, Rhythm and Shapes class for his age group. He is so interested in cars, lorries, loves to point out the sun and moon and try to name the animals in the fields. The only challenge would be sharing the class with lots of new children, as he is very shy. I'm hoping the play would gradually put him at ease! For all the groups I found, I like this one the most. Hopefully they will expand and do classes all over soon.

Did you go to a playgroup when you were younger? What was it like? Mine was at the top of a huge hill and I still remember the nursery rhymes, the smell of plasticine and little musical games we used to do! It's probably one of my earliest memories, it left such an impression on me haha. What is your earliest memory?

  11. I hope Oscar enjoys playgroup when he starts! :) It's good that there are so many options foir kids these days.

I went to a playgroup when I lived in Fiji with my family but I don't remember a lot about it. I was 3 and 4. In England I started school at 5 because there wasn't reception then.
