Curly Wurly cupcakes

Curly Wurly Cadbury cupcakes recipe
I first wondered about making these during my recent Nostalgic Picks post, thinking how fun it would be to make a cake version of my childhood all time favourite chocolate bar, the Cadbury Curly Wurly.

Thinking back to the early noughties, I lived for Curly Wurly's and Zap ice creams. A toffee and chocolate combination was easiest to do but I can't wait to try making a batch of Zap ice cream cupcakes!

I managed to find this recipe to make these beautiful babies. They are toffee and chocolate marble cakes so I made two different sets of batter and combined them later in the cupcake cases. I managed to make eight cakes from the recipe and they even fit perfectly, nice and snug in my cat mug!

For the chocolate batter you will need: 60g unsalted butter, 60g caster sugar, 50g self raising flour, 10g cocoa powder, 1/2 tsp baking powder and one large egg. Combine the butter and sugar together and then add the rest of the ingredients, combining as you go. For me, the amount of cocoa was a bit strong in the cakes and I think I would use slightly less next time even though gal loves her chocolate.

For the toffee batter you will need: 60g unsalted butter, 45g light soft brown sugar, 1tbsp golden syrup, 60g self raising flour, 1/4tsp mixed spice and one large egg. Cream together the butter, sugar and syrup and gradually add sifted flour, mixed spice and egg, to beat until fully combined.

Using a teaspoon, alternatively scoop spoonfuls of the different batters in to the cases. One spoon chocolate, one spoon toffee. Pop them in the oven on a gas mark 5/190c for around 20 mins until lightly browned on top. Don't forget the icing sugar and Curly Wurly bars to decorate afterwards!

I decorated my cakes with traditional vanilla buttercream frosting, toffee sauce, and grated pieces and chunks of Curly Wurly. To make the toffee sauce, gently melt Curly Wurly pieces, double cream and caster sugar together, stirring continuously. I then drizzled the sauce over the cakes to decorate.

I would love to suss out a vegan version of these too, so everyone can enjoy them! What are you looking forward to making this summer? I'm excited to try a rose petal recipe from my journal using  our lovely garden roses - and Zap cupcakes of course! Thank you so much for your kind words

  2. These look nice, will have to have a go! :) I used to eat Curly Wurys when I was younger and occasionally still do now. I don't remember Zap, I just looked it up. Lovely colours! I might have had them and forgotten, lol. It also brought up Fab lollies in the search. I used to like Fab. Ahh nostalgia! lol.
