Garden in the fells

Rydal hall and gardens visit

Just as the bluebells and rhododendrons were beginning to take hold, we took a trip further up in to the Lakes and visited beautiful Rydal hall and gardens. My childhood was made from these kinds of

outings, my Grandma and I would always go for daytrips on sunny days, when I wasn’t helping her hang out the washing in her garden glade of rhododendrons and eucalyptus trees, or playing hide and seek!

A special highlight of our day for me was having this little fellow land in my palm! His wings are so spectacular, such a pretty cream and green mottled pattern, unlike of any butterfly I have seen before. It was only when I unfurled my fingers that he took off on the breeze, with Oscar chasing after.

The gardens were framed by fells, secluding and hiding them, standing tall above Rydal water. There was the most beautiful Magnolia tree, petals spinning like confetti around us and landing in the shrubbery.

Rydal Hall itself is so pretty! I adore the balcony, strewn with honeysuckle and climbing plants. The little flower basins are so darling too! We only explored the top half of the gardens on this occasion but there was so much to see, I would love to make a return trip, especially to see the bluebells out in their prime.

Oscar couldn’t keep still, charging round and around the gardens and even found a few special stones to collect in his pockets and my camera case and down his jumper xD I adore this photo, his little blonde hair blowing in the breeze is so heart melting! He toppled over once in the gravel but didn’t cry for long.

We sat under a canopy of Magnolia, in the shade, a shady, sprawling white pink carpet of them spilt beneath our feet. The air is so sweet and fresh and, for me, this place is a special kind of paradise, it’s so fairytale-esque! *dons straw hat, long, floaty dress and pockets embroidered handkerchiefs*

Such a beautiful old door in the wall! I adore quirky features like this, and the staircases are so grand and beautiful. Just being here is such an escape from the outside world and there is a sense of timelessness. It’s easy to imagine you have ventured in to a completely different era or the Secret Garden novel.

A view from the bridge, where a little tea shop and seating area look out over the waterfall. It goes on to form a little beck that winds its way round the corner, and down and away to form the babbling brook that bubbles down to Rydal water. It’s such a beautiful little place, here, tucked away in the hillside.

Now is my time to teach Oscar about trees and flowers – but I think he would rather learn about stones! Sorry I’ve been a little MIA, I have been on holiday with my family and working on some new summer posts. We had beautiful May day weather yesterday! What have you been up to?

Rydal Hall & Gardens look so wondeful 🙂 *adds to UK travel bucket list* What a beautiful Magnolia tree! How lucky that you got to hold an Orange Tip Butterfly! My university campus was in the countryside and the woodlands there was covered with this species of butterfly and in Spring time, I would spend my Sunday afternoons trying to photograph them. I never got as close as you did though! x
