If you follow me on twitter or instagram you may have heard that we are happily getting acquainted with two of the most heart warming male baby gerbils named Sushi and Heihei! I fell for them instantly
To make their cage feel more like a home and more enjoyable I decided to celebrate the release of Moana on dvd by getting a little crafty when coming up with decor ideas. I took advantage of the 3 for 2 offer at Pets at Home, plus used the 10% discount I got as a VIP member. Here is a little gerbil home tour!
Hello Heihei! Heihei is our little Siamese gerbil, complete with little dark nose and tail. It's amazing how different his personality is to Sushi; he is nosy, confident, friendly and a little cheeky! He is always the first to explore a new toy and loves the ones we chose, an assortment of tunnels and hanging toys.
I tried to choose natural materials that might be found on Moana's island, like driftwood, banana leaf, coconut husk, bamboo and seagrass, at the same time being safe for gerbils. Heihei loves the seagrass tunnel, tearing out the fibres and carrying them about in his mouth to make a little nest to sleep in.
Hanging toys include this little rope toy, made with pieces of banana leaf, coconut husk, wood and bamboo. As a little ode to Moana, I engraved a little heart on the side (but couldn't quite fit the hook on, I hope they won't mind!) They have already pretty much destroyed this one and chewed it in half.
I chose this coconut shell hideaway, with coconut being such an important seed and symbol on Moana's island, not anticipating how small the entry hole might be! They love using it upside down as a treat bowl though, eating pieces of cold, fresh pepper and raw carrot, and climbing inside to knaw on it.
It's definitely a favourite with Sushi! He is much more timid and shy than Heihei and needs a little encouragement sometimes. He moves very quickly, in starts and stops. He rushes to hide if your hand enters the cage, but comes to explore if you keep still and quiet. He was unsure of the toys at first; he tends to assume more of a homekeeper role and stays shuffling the nest, but came to adore the coconut!
Another hanging toy is this beautiful beaded mobile, with a little wooden clasp to fix to the roof of the cage. It has a coconut husk roof overlooking little pieces of banana leaf and coconut husk, threaded on a piece of rope. It has pink, yellow and green sections and is so bright and colourful, like a carnival.
I swear this isn't a sponsored post haha, only by a girl who loves her pets! Sometimes you can't go wrong with a kitchen roll tube or cardboard box! Hello Sushi housekeeper, making your nest. He has the cutest white stripe on his chin. I just love how intelligent they are and to see their personalities develop is just amazing! Have you seen Moana yet? Did you catch the name reference? ♡
