A Valentines day detox

I am a big believer that the fundamental key to romantic living is maintaining a loving relationship with oneself. Whether you are single, coupled up or caught up in a complex
relationship with cake, I believe that everyone can have a reason to celebrate Valentine's day and not just in that card-chocolate-head for the expensive candle department way (although these gestures are always welcome!!). It's about practising and celebrating our own ability to cultivate and attract happiness, through dark times, without the need to depend on others to make us feel happy. Here are some ideas to treat yourself, the one most deserving of your love and affections.

. Wrap up little gifts for your friends/partner/family... and have fun customising each one! Surprising people is one of the nicest things and is often hard to do at Christmas or their birthday when you know they are already expecting something! Gift them something home made or focus instead on the wrapping, customising it with layers of patterned or tissue paper, thread little charms on the ribbon before you tie a bow or glue sequins on the outside, maybe adding a protection vial for a finishing touch. Giving is one of my favourite feel-good things to do, there's nothing quite like it to achieve that warm, fuzzy, connected feeling!

. Organise a favourite outing. I like to enjoy a long walk in the woods or nearest park, followed by a huge bouquet of flowers for the table. I love to take Mitch and Oscar along too but occasionally venture alone when I need a little break from mumma duty or sometimes taking photographs! Open your heart wide to everything and absorb all the sensations around you that are going on, even when the winter landscapes are laid bare and barren. Composing poetry is optional, as is taking photos: just recording a little personal impression of the world around you. I love to visit somewhere old, such as church gardens, where I can hear the timeless, aged, almost melancholy sound of bells; perhaps a historic house, cottage or museum: somewhere I can relax, reflect, connect and be inspired. This is something you can practise whatever your relationship status, just shedding your plans, letting go, stepping outside and letting nature decide your path. Record yourself somewhere, make history, just like the others before you.

. Lighting candles. When it comes to evening, basking in the soothing light of candles can help to ground you, tune in to a serene state of being and release your troubles to the past. Turn away from temptations and distractions for the while, watch the flickering flame and use it to help you focus on the here and now, the present moment. Realise how valuable that moment really is, how rich it feels to be part of it.

. Build a mini crystal altar. Try building a little altar filled with your favourite things! This could be on a shelf, in a special box, by the side of your bath or even take place in a journal or notebook. I love to fill it with small representations of the things I appreciate most with cut outs, photos etc. My favourite crystals to use are rose quartz for self worth, moonstone to connect with the divine feminine spirit, and amethyst for letting go of any self prejudice and false ideas about ourselves, allowing us to envisage, and connect with, our dreams. Ametrine is also one favourite crystals to use because it's great for awakening creative energies!

. Make a gratitude list. Most of the time, it is the most wonderful things in life we take for granted. Having the freedom to go walking, write whenever we want, make beautiful spaces, plant gardens, paint walls, collect things and love freely is amazing and also sadly denied to many in the world. Realising how special these little little experiences are will help you to notice them on a daily occurrence, making everything feel a little bit more magical and attracting more - forwarding many more from your subconscious to the conscious mind.
What do you like to do on Valentines day? Do you have any rituals?

  10. Loved your ideas! They're all so nice and positive. I too think that Valentine's day doesn't have to be about all the lovey dovey things. Infact in Finland we call it Friends Day,and I think friends is a very good word for all the closest people in our lives :)
    Have a lovely week girlie!

  13. This is such a lovely thought for valentine's day when most of what you see is just 'valentines makeup look'. I love those too, but it's nice to see something different for once!
Hope you had a lovely, thoughtful day!
