Kitten Update!

I felt it was time for a kitten update so here are some pics of Neffi's kittens, now at just over 3 weeks old! They've grown so much over the past few weeks and are such big kitties, probably as there are only 3 in the litter now - plus they're all boys!
I also found that kittens are the hardest thing to photograph as they just won't stay still! It took me ages to get pics that weren't somewhat blurry but I managed to get a few nice shots ^^ They have big button blue eyes already, just like their mum!

Lush Christmas Haul & Review! ♥

The Lush Christmas Collection is here, bringing forth an amazing selection of bath bombs, bubble bars and all sorts for celebrating the season in your bathroom this year! As always, Lush orders are delivered super fast, they definitely make great gifts for all ages and there's such a big colourful assortment. I'm so happy to do a review as I feel like I haven't done one in ages! Firstly, apologies for keeping the wrappers on - I may give one to my sister for Xmas so I wanted them to stay fresh - but anyhow I picked out a few lovely bombs from the Limited Edition range and here is my verdict so far...

Dealing with Anxiety ♥

Happy Friday everyone!
I apologise for not posting in a while; I've been going through a difficult patch with my anxieties and have recently started a new type of medication. I've never really spoken out about my problems online but want to help raise awareness.
Recently it's been growing ever more difficult for me to attend college and study for my January exams, so I've decided to re-sit Year 13 next year. It's a difficult decision but will enable me to try and face my fears at my own pace, without getting overly stressed about exams. I'm also trying to find a medication that will help me with this process, as at the moment I'm finding it near impossible to challenge myself at all.

My fears will probably seem very silly to a lot of people, such is anxiety. It's usually irrational and often people don't understand why I feel scared, because there's actually nothing there to be scared about. To me, though, it feels very real and life is very hard to handle a lot of the time.
Depression and anxiety typically run in my family; my grandma and my mum have bad depression and my uncle suffers from bipolar. My main fears are being away from home, people going missing, and generally being convinced that something bad will happen. I also feel physically unwell with it sometimes, a common symptom of depression. In the past I've experienced disorders such as OCD, Social Anxiety and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Despite this, most often I have a positive outlook for the future. Although my fears seem very real and that any moment something awful could happen, I'm believing more and more that I can cope. I have a list of things I'd love to do in the future and am trying to view it in a more positive light, rather than heading in to the unknown. I'd love to go to Uni after Year 13! I found talking to people helped me a lot, especially receiving support on the Childline message boards from people suffering from the same thing. I do believe it can be overcome! :)
I'm postponing my art for a while until I feel a little better but will keep posting! Thanks so much for reading! :D x

This week's inspiration... ♥

Happy Friday all! Hope you're excited for the weekend! ♥
This post follows my new love of shabby chic style (Laurence Amelie) and how it touches on 18th century elegance. I love these photos as you can almost imagine them as paintings in their own right. The outfits and furniture are so elegant and beautiful and I'm taking notes on details like chandeliers, hanging ornaments and damask prints :)
To follow, I've also included some of my favourite picks from beautiful vintage decor store  Sass & Belle. I can feel a new (possibly interior) project coming on and maybe a 'Marie Antoinette' themed suite room? Would love to do a room tour and maybe a virtual one after! ♥

What do you think? Got any craft ideas lined up this weekend? ^^ ♥

Work on 'Daisy Daisy' piece ♥

It's been a while since I did a post on my art so I thought I'd show you how 'Daisy Daisy' is coming on! Here's a quick preview above :)
I didn't want to photograph the whole thing yet as I don't want to give too much away at this stage of the painting (mainly because she looks like an alien without hair! xD)
It does need a lot more work doing. I'm pleased with the eyes and skin tone so far - I made sure to mix blues and greens in for the cooler tones in the face - but the other half of the face needs re-modeling. Acrylic is my favourite media to use as you can just keep sculpting and refining until it looks right. I have to say that I took the plunge with this one - I went straight in with a sponge full of paint and didn't map it out with pencil beforehand. This technique, although trickier, I've found it's much more fun!

In a five minute break from my studies, I decided to challenge myself. I find charcoal one of the trickiest medias to use as it just ends up smudging everywhere! I don't feel that I have as much control over it as I do with acrylic and in that way I tend to avoid it. This was a barrier I was determined to break through however, and I managed to pull out a decent sketch within a few minutes!
I get my charcoal from a local DIY store, the putty rubber from a rather posh art shop and the paper I use is actually lining paper I got from Poundland! Seriously! It works just as well as posh cartridge paper and is so much cheaper! (For painting I need a slightly rougher texture from Homebase)
Anyhow, I went straight in with the charcoal - no mapping out with pencil first - first defining the eye and building everything else around it. The subject is the same photo I'm using for my 'Daisy Daisy' piece above :)

On a final note, I decided to paper my sketchbook! I love this paper so much - very appropriate for my 'Daisy' piece! What do you think? ♥

Kitty pics and November faves ♥

Here are the kitty pictures I promised you! Aww :3 I got the perfect opportunity to take these today as I only had to lift up the cover of the basket to get a few great shots. So pleased! Glad to not have disturbed them too much either :) They're about a week old today...

Heheh the black and white kitty gets a face full of fur! xD

November faves - Maybelline's Baby Lips
I'm summing up my November faves in to one lipbalm because this one is a lifesaver! If you get chapped lips like me it's ideal! Couldn't find any in the Maybelline sections of my local stores so got this for about 4 quid on ebay :) Super moisturizing and smells so orangey, they come in lots of different flavours and colours ^^ Definitely recommended for the months ahead, I shall be stocking up! ♥

The Kitten Report ♥

On the 1st November, quite late in the evening, my little siamese Neffi decided to give birth to five little mewy things: 2 black and 3 white! Sadly two of the smallest kittens were too weak to feed and after much attempt from Neffi to encourage them to suckle, they didn't make it through the night.
Happily she still has three healthy (fluffy) kittens - all boys! - who, after six days now, are doing fine! I didn't want to disturb the nest too much so pictures may follow in a few days. But here is the kitten report from this morning...

video

(video taken by small compact camera; sorry the room's a bit dark lol ^^)

The father of the kits is a black and white tom from around the area so it's interesting to see if they'll have any Siamese in them :)

Laurence Amelie ♥

My favourite artist of the moment and definitely worth a feature on my blog.

I love

♥ The loose, messy style of the paint and how it looks almost spattered on, capturing the ethereal and 'flyaway' quality of these dresses. There's something romantic about the spontaneity of how it's been applied, and her subjects, mainly flowers and tutu dresses, being fairytale objects. The paint looks carelessly applied, which creates her famous 'shabby chic' style.

♥ Her use of colour! I love how stark whites are used against a dusky background. The pastel colours give a softer quality to her work and are reminiscent of  beautiful 18th century elegance. The colours are rich but they are so carelessly slapped on.; you can almost imagine it lying abandoned in an attic for years. In that way it holds a certain sadness for me, but you can also imagine how it would grace someone's boudoir or grand hall when hung among rich interior.

I will definitely be attempting some pieces in this style. It's refreshing also to try something more abstract, as most of my work tends to be more observational - and would also add a touch of shabby chic to my portfolio :)

The Neffi Report ♥

Happy Wednesday everyone! In this post I decided to give an update on how my little Siamese is doing with her pregnancy, since it's only a week until the kittens are due! It's her second litter and the kits are due to be born around Halloween. She's been eating a lot so far, sways alarmingly when she trots down the stairs, and looks like she's swallowed a football when she stands - so we're expecting a good few in there! You can also feel them kicking... aah so exciting... be prepared for a lot of pictures in a few weeks time. In the meantime I apologize for these photos being pretty darn huge, PM was being awkward on my computer :3

Prettiest name of the day - Reinette. I've been watching too much of Doctor Who's 'The Girl In The Fireplace'. It's a sweet name for a kitten though! Got any more name ideas? Please post below! ♥

Victorian Diary Project ♥

Ever since I was younger I wished I was born in a different time or wished I had my own tardis to travel back a few hundred years :') Although life today is much easier than it might've been then, there's something special about the past lives of our ancestors and what sort of world they might have lived in.
I live in a very old farmhouse with a colourful history - it's been a farm, a pub and a shop throughout the past few hundred years. It's so cool thinking about what people's lives must have been like living inside the same house. I think it's nice to imagine it's haunted if you believe in ghosts :)

There is also something almost magical thinking back to Victorian England - and all the years before that! When I was eleven I kept a Victorian Diary - inspired by Jacqueline Wilson's 'The Lottie Project', I invented a character who lived 100+ years ago in Victorian England. I filled each log in every day and gave her a big country house with servants, a swing in the garden, nice dresses and a siamese cat. Although it's nice to embrace modern trends, I like to keep a little piece of the past with me. Maybe in the future people will be imagining what our lives were like with IPhones, Laptops and Oreo biscuits! ^-^

'Au Natural' ♥

Proving this is also a lifestyle blog aswell as a product reviewing one, here's a quick study in acrylic I did in Art today. It's not completely finished but I was pleased with the tone so thought I'd take a few snaps to share with you :) I found the facial proportions the hardest to get right as the model had quite a square jawline with quite an elongated face. As I concentrated mostly on the face, the shoulders are unfinished but it was nice to challenge myself with a more complex piece, preparing my portfolio for Uni next year :)
